The movie vs. facts
Most people have seen or at least heard of the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose, but not many realize it was based on a true story. Many of the images seen in the movie are linked to the story of Anneliese Michel; though some contradict what happened with her.
When the symptoms started
Now in the movie, they portrayed the young girl Emily to have her symptoms appear during her first few days  of college life; away from home for the first time. Anneliese in fact had symptoms show up while she was still attending high school. She began to have convulsions (movie mentioned this like…twice I think), and she was diagnosed with Grand Mel Epilepsy. She began to have demonic hallucinations whenever she would go to pray along with voices that would tell her she was damned (can anyone say signs of schizophrenia?). In a matter of two years, Anneliese was convinced she was possessed and convinced her family to drop all of her doctors.
The Real Life Father Moore?
Tom Wilkinson’s character was more a combination of two real-life people, Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt. Both men were assigned by the Bishop of Wurzburg, Josef Stangl, to carry out “The Great Exorcism” on Anneliese Michel. The foundation for this ritual was the “Rituale Romanum”, which at the time, was still a valid 17th century Cannon Law. Father Arnold Renz had been a former missionary in China, and Pastor Ernst Alt was a pastor in a nearby community. Together they carried out 67 rites of exorcism over a period of 10 months, with one or two exorcism sessions held each week. Some sessions lasted up to four hours.
The Demons that possess her.
In the movie, there are seven altogether names that were listed during the climax of the movie. Emily listed being possessed by Cain, Nero, Judas, Legion, Belial, and Lucifer. While Anneliese had mentioned being possessed by these exact names, she also felt she was possessed by more than just them. The seven names were mentioned in the movie due to they were more “popular” names, the other people she thought were possessing her were just way-ward souls.
What disturbing things she did.
In the movie, the girl Emily is seen doing very disturbing things. Ranging from being unable to move in her bed, to being found contorted into shapes on the floor by her boyfriend, and to eating bugs and spiders in her room while she clawed the wall apart. She was also shown mutilating herself through holding onto barbed wire, and other various things. In Anneliese’s case, she carried out a number of highly disturbing actions. She licked her own urine off the floor. She ate flies, spiders, and coal. She bit off the head of a dead bird. In one instance, she crawled under a table and barked like a dog for two days. She could often be heard screaming through the walls for hours. Tearing off her clothes and urinating on the floor became a regular occurrence.
In her book, The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel, Felicitas D. Goodman embraces the possibility that Anneliese was not epileptic, and that the medication the doctors had given her to control her seizures only made her hallucinations worse
Was anyone found guilty of her demise?
Yes, actually. Everyone who was involved were found guilty of neglect. This list included not only the priest that was in on it, but also her very own mother. In the movie only the priest was found guilty of negligent homicide. Which was not the case in real life. There were four defendants, not just one. They were Father Arnold Renz, Pastor Ernst Alt, and Anneliese Michel’s parents, Josef and Anna. All four were found guilty of negligent homicide and sentenced to six months in prison, suspended with three years’ probation. Anneliese’s death was listed on the coronary report to have been brought on by malnourishment and dehydration.
